The chill music genre is known for its relaxed atmosphere and its ability to evoke a sense of tranquility. It emerged in the 1990s, largely as a subgenre of electronic and ambient music, designed to be played in chillout rooms of nightclubs, where attendees could rest and relax between sets of more intense music. Since then, it has evolved into a broad style that encompasses different subgenres such as chillwave, lo-fi, downtempo and trip-hop.

Chill is characterized by smooth beats, deep bass lines, ambient synthesizers and soothing sounds. The melodies are usually repetitive and ethereal, with little presence of vocals or lyrics, which facilitates an introspective and relaxing atmosphere. It is common to hear influences of jazz, bossa nova, reggae and world music in this genre, which add a variety of textures and colors.

Some iconic chillout artists and producers include Moby, Air, Thievery Corporation and Bonobo, who helped define the sound and popularize it in electronic music. Today, the genre has also expanded into the digital realm, especially with the boom of lo-fi music on streaming platforms, used as background music for studying, working or simply unwinding.
